Voices without borders: 2019 Regional public speaking and exchange

Kigali, Rwanda, in a remarkable display of unity and youth empowerment, the 2019 Regional Public Speaking and Exchange brought together secondary school students from Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo under the resonant theme: “Our Diversity, Our Opportunity.”

Organized by Ejo Youth Echo in collaboration with regional partner organizations, the five-day event became a vibrant platform for cultural expression, dialogue, and peacebuilding, offering students the opportunity to explore how diversity can become a unifying force rather than a dividing line.

A Celebration of culture and opening reflections

The program was officially opened by Hans Bretschneider, Civil Peace Service Coordinator at GIZ Rwanda, who emphasized the power of youth voices in shaping peaceful communities. “In our differences, there is richness. You are the future builders of this region, and your ability to communicate, to listen, and to understand across borders will define that future,” said Bretschneider. The opening day burst into color and melody as students showcased their rich cultural heritages through songs, poetry, traditional dress, and language, offering a moving tapestry of the Great Lakes’ diversity.

Learning nonviolent solutions

Day two centered on the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP), which engaged participants in creative conflict resolution methods. Through games, discussions, and role-plays, students shared personal experiences and explored how to respond constructively to prejudice, anger, and injustice. “It’s not just about avoiding violence, it’s about building understanding,” shared Geoffrey Kizito a participant from Uganda.

Reflection and remembrance

On the third day, students visited the Rwandan Parliament, home to the Campaign Against Genocide Museum. The visit served as a somber but crucial history lesson on the genocide against the Tutsi and Rwanda’s path to recovery. Students learned how divisive politics once fractured the nation and how unity and vision helped rebuild it. “It was painful but eye-opening,” said Niyungeko Kethia a Burundian student. “It showed us why peace and togetherness must be defended by every generation.”

From Dialogue to Action

Turning reflections into action, participants were grouped with facilitators to prepare speeches and creative presentations on how diversity can be harnessed as an opportunity. The day was filled with passionate brainstorming and storytelling as students translated their experiences into powerful messages.

The Power of Youthful Voices

The final day culminated in student presentations at Ape Rugunga Secondary School, where the young speakers articulated their visions of a more inclusive and united region. The event closed with cultural performances, applause, and recognition for all who made the exchange possible.

Organizers, teachers, and students were all honored for their contributions, with a shared commitment to keep the dialogue alive. “What we’ve seen this week is not just talent, it’s leadership,” said Betty Ndayisaba an Ejo Youth Echo representative. “Our diversity is indeed our opportunity.”

As the sun set on the 2019 Regional Public Speaking and Exchange, it left behind more than memories. It left behind young ambassadors of peace, ready to speak for change and unity in their communities.
