Honoring the International Day of Peace 2024

September 21, 2024 – Kigali, Rwanda — In celebration of the International Day of Peace 2024, our team proudly joined fellow organizations committed to sustainable peace, answering an invitation from MINUBUMWE (Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement). The gathering was held under the powerful and culturally resonant theme: “The Role of Rwandan Cultural Values and Taboos in Promoting Peace.”

This year’s commemoration emphasized how traditional Rwandan wisdom including imigenzo, imyitwarire, and kirazira (taboos) continues to serve as a foundation for dialogue, unity, and peaceful coexistence in both communities and institutions.

By participating in this national conversation, our organization reaffirmed its commitment to peacebuilding rooted in Rwandan identity, heritage, and storytelling. The event brought together peace actors from across the country to reflect on the enduring relevance of cultural values in conflict prevention and resolution.

“Rwandan culture has always carried powerful tools for healing and reconciliation,” Jean Aime Muhawenayo shared. “It is time we honor and preserve them in our peacebuilding practices today.”

The event also served as an opportunity to network with local peacebuilders, civil society actors, and youth representatives who are actively contributing to a peaceful Rwanda. Discussions highlighted the importance of intergenerational dialogue and the need to integrate traditional wisdom into modern approaches to peace education.

As media professionals and storytellers, we are reminded of our role in amplifying these values, using our platforms to foster unity and mutual respect.

This #IDP2024 celebration reinforces a simple but profound message: Peace is not only a goal it is a way of life, deeply rooted in our cultural identity.
